Thus wrote Lieutenant-General Vasily Chuikov, 62nd Army's Commander, about 14 October 1942. As hundreds of tons of steel where hurled against the Soviet defenders, the Germans unleashed a critical onslaught in what they perceived as their D-day for Stalingrad.
This same day Hitler issued the winter standby directive to his troops on the eastern front. It read "This year's summer and fall campaign, excepting the operations currently under way and several local offensives still contemplated, has been concluded." As for the "operations currently under way" 6th Army was ordered not only to continue, but also to strengthen its offensive.
Although badly depleted for the most part, the divisions mustered by both sides in the industrial district of the city still embodied a considerable fighting potential. With regard to density, seldom in the history of wars such a small territory was contested by such a quantity of manpower, artillery and aircraft.
After the equivalent of a full month of fighting within the city, the culminating point was about to be reached. Towards mid- October, after having reorganized of his attacking forces, General Paulus moved the most able formations into line, expecting the entire front to collapse in the northern sector of Stalingrad, then to finish off 62nd Army's truncated remnants with an enveloping maneuver along the Volga, as was his intent from the beginning.
The second volume of the Stalingrad Battle Atlas book series covers another 35 days of fighting inside the city. It relies upon hundreds of wartime reports and recently released archival documents translated by the author.
The main sources consist in German 6th Army and Soviet 62nd Army War Diaries, along with data on their units, corps, divisions and regiments. Based on the precise information these documents provide, this volume features specifically designed maps with unit positions for each day of active operations.

I had previously stated that the 1st volume by Joly on the battle for Stalingrad covering 30 days in September-October, 1942, was a very good overview of this epic in the Eastern Front. Volume 2 does not contradict this assessment. It extensively covers the next 30 days in October-November. Same pros and cons: excellent documentation and primary sources access, smart presentation/layout with week/days split, incredible level of details in the situation maps (especially tactical), etc. Some more captions on maps and photos would have been appreciated. A noteworthy book series for the Eastern Front buffs, and an indispensable one for the Stalingrad specialists.Product details

There are three volumes as of 2014. Each chronologically maps the front positions, and gives descriptions of the action.

This series is obviously a labor of love for the author based upon the research that he has done. I enjoyed the day by day treatment of the battle with the maps, orders of battle, and the quotes from the participants concerning each day's fighting. And the price of each volume was such a value! I bought the set of four and noticed that the fourth volume was about four times the length of each of the prior three books, and contained facsimilies and translations of the German and Russian armies' war diaries for each day, along loss reports and the combat situation of the units that were fighting outside of the city. Detail and translations of documents that cannot be found anywhere else and the price of the fourth volume was only a few dollars more than the earlier, much shorter books. So I got the new, much larger 2017 versions of the first three books, and they included the additional material for a similar, extremely reasonable price! I'm not one that likes to buy newer editions of books I already own, but in this case and at this price point, it is still an incredible value! The maps in the books are good situational maps, a lot of them are based upon period aerial photos. Due to the method of printing and the paper used (it's good paper, just not shiny photo paper), the sharpness of details is impacted. However, to publish a book of 400+ pages on shiny paper that could show all of the map detail would likely need to be priced around $50+ a volume which would limit the number of people who would be able to buy it. Even David Glantz with his self-published atlas books ran into the same detail issues to keep their price down. It's a decision that every author and self publisher has to make, and I think that Mr. Joly made the right one.
I found this entire four volume series almost useless as a reference on the battle for Stalingrad. First of all are the maps, which are poorly done and convey little information on the daily struggle for this city. Maps should be the most important part of an atlas. This is the second volume to contain excerpts of the Sixth Army War Diary, but the excerpts omit any units not fighting in the city itself. After all, The Battle of Stalingrad is important because the entire Sixth was destroyed. Please read my review of Volume I of this series to get a fuller explanation of why I cannot give a recommendation of this entire series.
Just like the first one, the second volume of this series focuses on the battle inside Stalingrad city proper (no coverage of operations on the flanks). The fighting in October was even more fierce than in September, if possible. Apart from its peculiar print (a controversial old-style font set that may appeal or not), there is no big surprise here, only neat description of events with plenty of illustrations. Though not without some minor flaws (which prevented me from giving five stars), this is definitely a must-have for anyone interested in Stalingrad.
Same format, same review as for volume I. The period covered is slightly longer. The previous book ended just before the climatic German assault on the factories this part is fully detailed in the present volume. In turn, book 2 ends on the eve of the Soviet Uranus offensive in November 1942.
Mr.Joly did a great job of research and mapping. The ideal handbook of the Stalingrad Battle referring to the fighting in the city itself. I don't know if this will be covered in upcoming publications, but if they will be as good as these, in which case the series should definitely constitute a landmark in the literature about this campaign.
This is the second atlas of a trilogy of books dealing with the 1942-1943 Battle of Stalingrad. These atlas's provide invaluable information the study of the greatest and most titanic battle of the Second World War.
It's got lots of maps, a few photos, orders of battle and individual unit strengths at the divisional level. Day-by-day look at the battle, spiced up with quotes from actual participants (mostly Soviet, a few German). The primary weakness is it's "done on my manual typewriter" appearance and some English language issues - it reads like a mediocre translation (from Russian into English perhaps) in places. This second volume also has to contend with the declining weariness of both sides. Unlike the first volume where there was something happening every day there are days here where nothing happened due to rain or both sides reorganizing.
